When I was still with a bank, one of the policies that I frowned about is the non-acceptance of an expired ID card. I find it rather absurd and outright ridiculous that I can’t accommodate check encashments nor new accounts opening because ID’s presented to me by clients were expired.

Oftentimes, I find myself too at the other end of the deal. The more it looks annoying to me. Imagined being refused accommodation because of an expired ID! Not only it is embarrassing to be denied, but such rule is definitely and absolutely insane!

You may ask why do I say it’s ridiculous, let me tell you why. I have been carrying my name since birth. I’ve been registered… it shows in my birth certificate. And the same name is the one I used in schools. It was the one shown in my school ID’s, borrower’s cards, school club’s ID’s, etc. And once school year or the semester ends, the ID’s expires.

Now, I have more ID’s such as my professional license as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), issued by Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC), and my Driver’s License issued by the Land Transportation Office (LTO), among others. Most comes with 3 or 4 years validity, and once expired, they are subject for renewal.

If I present these ID’s while still within validity, I have no problem. I have proven my identity because I have presented valid, unexpired ID’s. But once expired yet I presented them still, I am denied. Because they are no longer a valid proof of one’s identity.

So when my ID’s expire, does that mean I also cease to be me? And until I am able to renew them, I can’t be me again, because I can’t prove my identity?! Is that ridiculous or what?! As far as I’m concern, an expired ID only means that; you can’t legally practice a profession (in the case of a professional license) or you can’t legally drive around a vehicle (in the case of driver’s license)… but YOU ARE STILL YOU! A valid, legal, and a real person!

Back in my banking days, there were instances that I do accept expired ID’s as proof of identity. In fact, I find them to be a more binding proof of identity. Because the fact that they are expired only shows that they have served their purpose, and the person who owns them have used them in whatever legal aspect they may be used.

Perhaps I am alone in this thinking, or too few people have really given it a thought. Because as we all know, as far as legal aspect is concern - an expired ID is not a valid ID.

Insane.

I completely agree with you. IT IS Valid ID but may not be a valid to drive with, it should still server the purpose of identifying you. May I remind the banks out there that we pay for their service and as part of their service they protect our money, but by not allowing me to withdraw money because I did not renew my drivers license is absolutely ridiculous. If I can use my debit card or call the bank on the phone and make wire transfers or do online banking or order/apply for credit cards or additional cards…it seems utterly ridiculous that I cannot cash a check or deposit one because I did not pay $30 to renew a drivers license. I should not have to be able to drive to prove I am me, especially when I can pass all security questions over the phone to prove my identity to the same bank!

I completely agree with you as well. This happened to a friend of mine at TGI Fridays whose driver’s license expired and she was not even allowed to sit at the bar! They said there was no way to prove that she was over 21. I said,” Her drivers license expired, which meant that at one point it was valid! If anything it proves two things: her name and birthdate!” In any event, she was refused service which I can understand, but then they said she could not sit at the bar which I think was over kill and very embarrassing to her.

As her friends we supported her by talking to the manager and she said the exact same thing. A bartender insisted that she close her tab and at that point we all wanted to leave! They called the police on us, saying that some in our group did not pay a tab, however, one in our group was refused service and forced to leave! The most any of us had was half of a beer that we could not enjoy or finish!

The patron rules said that in order to be served Alcohol you must be over 21 and show proper ID. The rules never said you had to be 21 just to sit at the bar! In any event she proved this with her expired drivers license!

If an expired drivers license no longer proved your identity there would be much chaos! People licenses expire everyday and some just have not had the time to get to the dmv to get it renewed for any number of reasons. My argument is it should still prove your name and birthdate.

As for my friend, I will be writting a letter to the Fridays Corporate office about how we were mistreated and singled out for this at T.G.I. Friday’s 12281 Tech Rd Silver Spring, MD 20904.

That is really a bummer! What do those guys want to see? A birth certificate?

Some people don’t think anymore… they don’t even need to establish the identity of your friend, only her age
